WHAT? Democrat Congressman says families should eat Chef Boyardee to cope with high inflation
Today’s a day that ends in y, so a politician said something stupid and is getting roasted by the internet. The latest member of Congress to put his foot in his mouth is Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, a New York Democrat, who had an… interesting example of how families should deal with sky-high food prices and inflation.
An interviewer reportedly asked Maloney, “Hudson Valley residents are feeling pain at the pump and at grocery stores, what have you done, and what do you plan to do to help solve our inflation problem?”
“Yeah, well, I grew up in a family where, you know, if the gas price went up, the food budget went down,” the congressman responded. “So by this time of the week, we’d be eating Chef Boyardee if that budget wasn’t gonna change. So that’s what families have to do.”
Maloney got deservedly roasted by social media onlookers for this portion of his remarks.

He went on to list actions he thinks Congress is taking and should take to (supposedly) lower prices:
“Here’s what we should do. We’re capping seniors out of pocket costs in the Medicare program. That allows seniors to budget. We’re also negotiating finally, in the Medicare program, with the big prescription drug companies to lower the cost of everybody’s prescription drugs. In addition to that, we’ve released 90 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve that’s what’s taken about $1.30 off the price of a gallon of gas. That’s a big help. We’ve got to do more to keep that price from going back up.”
But aside from his tone-deaf, cringeworthy comment about Chef Boyardee and some random, highly-dubious claims about niche Democratic policies, Maloney ignored the massive elephant in the room: what created all this inflation in the first place?
The truth is it was Congress’s decision to spend trillions of dollars we don’t have—and have the Federal Reserve print the new dollars to pay for it all—that caused prices to surge to such historic levels. Yes, inflation is a global phenomenon, but many economists agree that it’s significantly higher in the US than it would’ve been without the Democrats’ massive, bloated stimulus bill. (And no, inflation isn’t happening because of “corporate greed.” It’s the government spending).
So, any answer Maloney offers for inflation that doesn’t acknowledge and remedy this root cause of the problem is not just cringeworthy but actually useless.
Members of Congress earning six-figure salaries at the taxpayer’s expense should not be encouraging their constituents to eat Chef Boyardee to deal with high prices. They should be fixing their disastrous policies that created this mess to begin with.
