Rand Paul and Chip Roy introduce bill to wrangle out of control NIH

Dr. Anthony Fauci was Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for over 38 years, and during that time he became the highest paid official in the entire federal government.

What did he do with all that time, money, and unchecked power? Well, he supported torturing animals and helped ruin lives, for starters. From his disastrous handling of the AIDS epidemic that turned patients into lepers, to absurd lockdowns, vaccine mandates, and forced cloth masks during COVID-19, Fauci stumbled again and again wreaking hell on society, while suffering no personal repercussions for his bad decision-making himself.

Fauci is now gone but his old role isn’t - leaving plenty of space for the next scientist with a god complex to step in.

Senator Rand Paul and Congressman Chip Roy don’t want a repeat of Fauci, so they  introduced a bill that would reform the NIH and eliminate the NIAID altogether.

The NIH Reform Act would replace the NIAID with three separate national research institutes that would be led by directors subject to Senate confirmation and limited to no more than two 5-year terms.

“We’ve learned a lot over the past few years, but one lesson in particular is that no one person should be deemed “dictator-in-chief.” No one person should have unilateral authority to make decisions for millions of Americans,” said Dr. Paul.

“To ensure that ineffective, unscientific lockdowns and mandates are never foisted on the American people ever again, I’ve introduced this bill to eliminate Dr. Anthony Fauci’s previous position as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and divide the role into three separate new institutes. This will create accountability and oversight into a taxpayer funded position that has largely abused its power and has been responsible for many failures and misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Paul continued.

And to be clear, there was a gross abuse of power going on under Fauci’s regime. Thanks to Freedom of Information Acts filed by The White Coat Waste Project (where I am a Fellow), we learned that Fauci was using a passthrough organization (EcoHealth Alliance) to illegally carry out gain-of-function research in Wuhan (and likely beyond). That is information Fauci then worked tirelessly to try to deny and obfuscate once it became increasingly likely that those dollars were tied up in the origins and subsequent leak of COVID-19.

And the American people likely would have never known that without White Coat Waste’s FOIAs and Sen. Paul’s continual insistence that Fauci answer questions on these matters before Congress.

“From the earliest days of the pandemic, unaccountable public health bureaucracies proved themselves far more adept at ruining lives than saving them. Never again should a single individual, like Dr. Anthony Fauci, wield unchecked power and influence over the lives of the American people. Breaking up Dr. Fauci’s taxpayer funded bully pulpit into three separate agencies — and requiring Senate confirmation for all their future directors — is one of many actions necessary to allow the American people to hold public health agencies accountable,” said Rep. Chip Roy.

The legislation is currently cosponsored by Senators Mike Lee (R-UT), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Mike Braun (R-IN), and Josh Hawley (R-MO) in the Senate.

According to a press release on the bill, this kind of reform is in step with prior actions taken to get rogue government agencies and unelected bureaucrats under control. After one of the most corrupt officials of all time (J. Edgar Hoover) stepped down from the FBI, Congress passed a law in 1976 to limit the FBI Director to a single 10-year term.

We have all the proof we need that letting one person dictate public health matters is as dangerous (if not more) than any actual disease. Reform is needed now.
