OOPS: The IRS sent 1 million stimulus checks to inmates—including some murderers
Almost every single part of Congress’s COVID-19 spending binge has been plagued by waste, fraud, and abuse at levels previously unthinkable. The latest example of this runaway waste is the revelation that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) sent 1 million stimulus checks to current inmates—including some murderers!
As reported by the Washington Free Beacon’s Joseph Simonson, “More than 1.1 million incarcerated individuals received COVID-19 stimulus checks, totaling over $1 billion dollars, according to internal data provided by the IRS. Roughly 163,000 of those recipients are individuals serving life sentences without the possibility of parole… life sentences are most commonly given to individuals convicted of homicide and rape.”
Yes, seriously. Congress sent more than a billion of your tax dollars in stimmy checks to literal inmates including convicted rapists and murderers.
"The American Rescue Plan was reckless in the amount of massive spending with no off-sets," Republican Congressman Don Bacon, who exposed this waste, told the Free Beacon. "Giving stimulus checks to death row inmates is a glaring example. This bill triggered the worst inflation in 41 years, costing the average family $500 a month. The poor suffer the most."
I wish I could say that this was some outlier example. But unfortunately this latest revelation is just a piece of a much broader, disturbing trend. We previously learned that the IRS sent billions of taxpayer dollars in stimmy checks to dead people and millions to random European citizens.
All this fraud, and that’s just from the stimulus checks!
The Paycheck Protection Program was similarly plagued by runaway fraud. But the expanded unemployment benefits—you know, the same economically genius ones that literally paid people more not to work—potentially lost more than $200 billion to fraudulent benefit claims and scammers. That’s an astounding 5 times more than the US government spent developing the COVID-19 vaccines!
The moral of the story here is clear.
If you think the feds can save the day and solve our problems if we just give them more of our money to spend, you’re absolutely clowning yourself. They’ll just find new ways to flush our tax dollars down the drain.
