Nancy Mace’s ‘Riley Gaines Report’ amendment passes House
On Thursday, Rep. Nancy Mace’s ‘Riley Gaines Report’ amendment successfully passed the House to be included as part of ‘Protecting Women and Girls in Sports Act,’ that also passed through Republican majority without a single Democratic vote.
The primary legislation would prevent biological males from participating in women's sports. Schools and universities that receive Title IX funding from the federal government would not be allowed to "permit a person whose sex is male to participate in an athletic program or activity that is designed for women or girls."
Mace’s amendment would commission a study of what kind of damage it might do to biological women who are forced to compete with trans women, who are biological males. The legislation is named after University of Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines who says she has endured trauma and even assault for speaking out against having to compete against biological men who identify as women.

Mace said on Thursday, “Riley Gaines’ lifetime of hard work was undermined by a biological male who was wrongly allowed to compete against women in NCAA sanctioned competition. Furthermore, she had to deal with the psychological trauma of being forced to share a locker room and change in front of a biological man.”
“Subjecting more women to this is cruel,” Mace continued. “All of the glass ceilings that have been shattered by women in sports have been for naught if we allow this to continue. I will stand with women and fight for their right to fair competition.”
Democrats have said the legislation is an attempt to “bully” trans kids. Democratic Congressman Greg Landsman argued, "This bill is about bullying children. Stop bullying children.” "We should rename it the 'cancel kids trans hate' bill," Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal insisted that, "This bill fuels a virulent hate campaign against kids who just want to play with their friends."

Last year, Lia Thomas became the first transgender woman to win NCAA swimming competitions, and was even nominated by the University of Pennsylvania for the NCAA’s 2022 “Woman of the Year” award.
With Democrats holding a slight majority in the Senate, this legislation is almost assured to fail and President Joe Biden has vowed to veto it should it cross his desk.
