Maine Democrats block resolution to investigate animal torture and COVID funding
The Communist Party of China has made many bogus statements regarding the origins of COVID, among them, they at one point tried to claim Maine’s Lobster industry was responsible for the disease.
As NBC News reported, “Zha Liyou, the Chinese consul general in Kolkata, India, tweeted an unfounded claim that Covid-19 could have been imported to China from the United States through a batch of Maine lobsters shipped to a seafood market in Wuhan in November 2019. It marks the latest in a series of theories that have been pushed by pro-China accounts since the start of the pandemic.”
At the time, Senator Susan Collins rightfully condemned the smear and pointed to the more likely origins of the disease (the Wuhan lab).

One would think, given these events, that the Maine legislature would be eager to clear the name of its fishermen and demand an investigation into the true origins of this pandemic. And at least one state representative, Sen. Eric Brakey, attempted that. But his resolution calling on Congress to finally look into the funding trail from the National Institutes of Health to the Wuhan lab in China was immediately blocked by Democratic Party leadership this week, who hold the control in the Maine legislature.

“Three years ago, the world came to a standstill due to the Covid-19 virus and there has never been a proper investigation into its origin. Instead, the American people have been subject to mass disinformation campaigns by public health authorities, more concerned with hiding their involvement in gain-of-function research than delivering truth,” Brakey said in a statement on the matter.
“I am disappointed Maine Democrats blocked this resolution — calling on Congress to investigate the origins of the virus — but the need for this investigation remains more important than ever,” he continued.
This is actually the second such resolution to be introduced this session. A few weeks ago, Texas lawmaker Briscoe Crain brought forward a similar resolution that is still moving through their legislature. Records revealed by the nonprofit animal welfare organization, the White Coat Waste Project (where I am a Fellow) has proven NIH funds were indeed being illegally passed through a third party organization to the Wuhan lab for gain-of-function research. Congress needs to put the final pieces of the puzzle together and see once and for all if these dollars did indeed fund the creation of this disease.
Investigating COVID’s origins should not be a partisan matter. Under the Obama administration, Democrats rightfully supported a ban on dangerous gain-of-function research. The Left has also traditionally claimed to care about things like animal torture, which gain-of-function research involves. And one would think that any rational person would be interested in knowing whether or not tax dollars were illegally used and led to the creation and subsequent leak of the largest pandemic of our lifetimes.
Furthermore, it’s interesting that there isn’t more of an urgency to stand up for the business owners and residents of the state whose line of work and products were smeared unjustly by the CDC—costing them untold amounts of dollars.
But instead, the actions by Democrats in Maine show that the wagons have been circled to protect those in our government who may bear responsibility in this matter—principles and outcomes be damned.
