Bipartisan group of congressional leaders rising up to stop animal torture in foreign labs

Despite the government’s initial attempts to stomp out the story, the prevailing theory for COVID’s origins are now that the virus was leaked from the Wuhan laboratory in China, likely as a result of risky research that involved animal torture (gain-of-function research) funded by US tax dollars. 

Experts knew there were issues with that lab for some time, and numerous whistleblowers tried to call attention to those issues, as well as the lab’s failures to follow basic protocols for years. But regardless of the mountain of damning evidence that has piled up against Wuhan, it has still be an astoundingly difficult feat to actually get the lab defunded.

Finally, earlier this summer, the Biden Administration suspended the Wuhan Institute of Virology’s eligibility to receive federal funding after the lab refused to hand over requested documents about its safety and security measures… but only for a ten year period.

Insanity.

But fortunately, some Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill seem to be putting aside their differences and coming together to ensure our taxes no longer get shipped to risky labs where they could create future pandemics, no longer fund labs in the homelands of our foreign enemies, and most importantly, no longer get used to torture animals overseas.

In September, the House Energy and Commerce Committee held a hearing in which both Republican and Democrat lawmakers provided testimony supporting bills to defund all animal labs in China and Russia, and to cut NIH funding for wasteful experiments on dogs. The representatives were bolstered with a bulk of research and FOIAs obtained by the White Coat Waste Project (where I am a Fellow), a free market government watchdog that seeks to eliminate taxpayer-funded animal torture.

Included in that research were the White Coat Waste (WCW) Project’s “WorldWide Waste” and “Beaglegate” in which the foundation exposed billions of tax dollars being shipped overseas and how illegal loopholes are still allowing this scary spending with no oversight or transparency, as well as Dr. Anthony Fauci’s horrific experiments on beagles.

Republican Congresswoman Lisa McClain testified in favor of her bipartisan Accountability in Foreign Animal Research (AFAR) Act, which would defund all animal labs in China, Russia, and other adversarial nations. Permanently. Democrat Congressman Don Davis is co-leading that effort with McClain and also testified in its favor.

They were joined in their efforts by Republican Congressman Greg Steube who also cited WCW’s Beaglegate investigations in testimony supporting his bipartisan Protecting Dogs Subjected to Experiments Act to defund all NIH dog experiments.

Notably, the Energy and Commerce Committee has jurisdiction over the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the nation’s single largest funder of animal testing. 

Let’s hope the committee members heed the information they were provided with and take actions. We may not agree on much in this country right now, but ensuring our tax dollars aren’t used to fund our enemies, torture animals, or create more diseases seems like an easy thing to come together over.
