No, Biden, Ending Mask Mandates Isn’t ‘Premature’

As politicians across the country start to roll back COVID restrictions and mask mandates, President Biden is calling this “premature.” In an interview that aired Sunday, he said that he was “commited to following the science,” concluding that it was a “tough call” but that mandates shouldn’t yet be scrapped.

“I love how people talk about personal freedom,” Biden said. “If your exercising personal freedom puts someone else in jeopardy, their health in jeopardy. I don’t consider that being very dealing with freedom.” (Nice word salad!)

I couldn’t disagree with this more strongly.

On the contrary, an end to COVID-19 mask mandates is long overdue. Vaccines that can nearly eliminate the risk of death from COVID are available for almost anyone who wants to take one. So, even if one assumes for the sake of argument that masks are effective, your decision to not wear a mask does not “put someone else in jeopardy” unless they’re at risk and have chosen to forgo vaccination, in which case they have no right to complain or coerce others. 

What’s more, studies have repeatedly shown mask mandates have no real benefit in terms of reducing the spread of COVID. And even the CDC and CNN doctors have admitted that the cloth masks widely worn to satisfy these mandates are basically useless.

It’s genuinely mind-boggling that Biden could defend the perpetuation of these mandates. 

Then again, polls show that despite all the evidence against them, Democratic voters still overwhelmingly favor mask mandates. So, the president isn’t “following the science”—he’s putting politics over Americans’ freedom.
